Positive results from the last vaccine trial
During 2009 further vaccine trials have been finalised and analysed with positive results. In these trials, the proteins which were earlier used (published in PLoS Pathogen, 2009) have been fused on gene level, thereby reducing the number of components. Earlier, the vaccine (Septavacc) was composed of seven separate proteins. We have in these tests demonstrated that three fusion proteins encompassing the same seven protiens (Strangvacc) result in good protection in the horse. The level of protection was evaluated based on pyrexia, lymph node scoring, systemic inflammation, clinical symptoms, bacterial colonisation, and post mortem analysis. All proteins included in the fusion proteins in Strangvacc gave rise to antibodies of the same magnitude as in Septavacc. By the strategy to make fusion proteins, the production costs will be greatly reduced. The method will be the one of choice for Intervacc.
